Vacillating between love and hate towards the dazzling monster called Don Giovanni, Donna Elvira sings a recitative bursting with inner tension before her aria "Mi tradì" in Mozart's "opera of all operas". It says: "che contrasto d'affetti in sen ti nasce!" A stark clash of emotions rages within her. This psychological ambiguity raging in a single human breast can also be rediscovered in larger contexts, not least in the study of Music and Drama. Time and again, the most relevant things only emerge from friction. In view of our complex present, it is therefore no coincidence that this issue of zwoelf, our No. 38, is dedicated to a pair of terms that describe tensions and ambiguities with particular precision: Ambivalence and ambiguity. Both phenomena play a central role in the arts. They demonstrate a particular strength of artistic forms of expression: the ability to enable experiences that cannot be reduced to a single perspective.
